Dave Ingram, Director of Intervision TV (www.intervision-tv.com)
has published the first book to bring together in one place all
the different aspects of setting up and running an Internet TV
station. The book is based on the series of successful and
highly regarded seminars he has delivered for the last 4 years
at Video Forum, now with Broadcast Live.
Variously known as Web TV, IPTV and Internet TV, the whole area
of putting content onto the Internet has developed from small
companies with good ideas, to becoming dominated by the major
broadcasters regurgitating their hit programmes, and now looks
set to be the domain of the independent niche players again.
The Internet TV Book (www.internettvbook.com), is quite unique
in the breadth of its content, covering everything from the
production process, through business planning, to video
streaming and how Internet TV station software works. The fact
that it delivers independent advice, and then pulls everything
together in a 7-step development plan are significant bonuses.
The section covering tapeless video production and virtual
studios, and in effect articulating and describing a whole
tapeless production system built around the Panasonic P2 format
is immensely practical and of great value to everyone in
broadcast production.
Another major chapter talks about Business Planning and how to
identify and research your audience, and makes a series of
telling points, not least of which is that every programme axed
by a major network is an opportunity for the niche broadcaster.
Many people in broadcast believe that TV has been dummed down,
and one of the key points this book makes is that for niche
audiences viewers are more likely to be intelligent, discerning
and knowledgeable, and they have to be treated with respect.
"Educate, Entertain, and Inform" gets a good airing.
There is also a sub-text going here, it is clear from the amount
of content in the book that relates to the production process,
that just because you are broadcasting in the Internet
environment does not mean poor quality. Quite the opposite in
fact, the author makes the point that being able to "add value"
to the viewing experience and being able to create programmes
that deliver for the Internet audience is crucial.
Although clearly aimed at the person or company wanting to start
an Internet TV station, with a huge section that covers video
streaming, encoding, selecting suppliers, and player software,
there is a lot here that is relevant to broadcasting generally
and to anyone wanting to start a cable or satellite TV station.
Indeed the impression you get is that an Internet TV station
could be and should be a development environment for all sorts
of ideas that can be taken on for broadcast TV Channels.
All in all a good book, an easy read, that de-mystifies much of
the technology, and brings together in one place all the
information needed, and just for that alone the book is worth
reading.
